With the winter weather across the Monaro being nothing but cold, bush fires are possibly far from our minds.
Just yesterday 2 separate grass fires started from slashers, both of the fires were easily extinguished. These were both a result from slashing in frost cured grass.
Before you slash ask yourself some questions.
How dry is the grass I'm about to slash?
Is my machinery in good condition?
Do I have a fire extinguisher? You must carry on the machinery a 16L minimum capacity knapsack spray pump filled with water; or 9L minimum capacity liquid fire extinguisher; or 0.9kg minimum capacity dry powder fire extinguisher.
Whilst slashing we recommend you have ready access to a farm firefighting unit with ample water to extinguish any fire outbreaks. Consider having someone as an observer to assist.
Call 000 immediately if you start a fire

Hazard Reduction burns going ahead this week
NPWS crews have today Monday 11th May, commenced a 859ha hazard reduction burn to the West of Numbla Vale. Smoke will be visible for the next few days.
RFS crews will also commenced a planned hazard reduction burn to the North West of Cooma tomorrow Tuesday 12th May.
Smoke may impact Cooma and Middle flat during the day and overnight.
If an overnight inversion forms smoke may concentrate locally around Woodlands Drive as well as low lying areas in Cooma.
Both these burns were delayed due to the passage of several cold fronts that bought strong wind warnings for the Monaro over the weekend.
